Partners & Projects

Through our MS in Data Science and AI Practicum Project Program, students collaborate with partner organizations on high-impact projects that address real-world challenges across sectors. These partnerships allow students to develop practical skills while advancing ethical and impactful solutions in fields such as civil rights, public health, education, and human rights.

Partner Spotlights

  • In collaboration with the ACLU, CAIDE teams contributed to multiple projects supporting civil liberties and justice.

    • Body Camera Review for Racial Profiling Case: A team developed a machine learning pipeline to automate the review of police body camera footage in a class action case related to racial profiling in Siskiyou County. Using computer vision and natural language processing, they linked video with written police reports and flagged potential incidents of pretextual stops. The system enabled real-time review at a scale previously unmanageable through manual methods.
    • Equity in Public Education: A second team created tools to analyze data from the Oakland Unified School District, identifying possible disparities in resource allocation between schools. The team also conducted an updated analysis of educational outcomes for Indigenous students in select Humboldt County districts, presenting their findings through accessible data visualizations.
    • School Discipline Disparities: Another project used machine learning to assess patterns in school suspensions and identify potential racial discrimination using feature importance analysis and statistical testing.
    • COVID-19 and Micromobility Policy: One student focused on equity in COVID-19 vaccine distribution, creating interactive maps and automating legislative data pipelines.

The work included building cloud infrastructure for storing and querying data to support future policy analysis.

  • In partnership with Candid’s Insights department, a CAIDE team conducted research on ethical data use in philanthropy. Projects explored diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within nonprofits, modeled nonprofit societal impact, and examined real-time grant making trends, particularly around racial equity. The work combined predictive modeling with ethical inquiry to better understand what drives transparency and inclusivity in nonprofit data practices

  • A researcher partnered with HRDAG to enhance conflict data accuracy in Syria and Sri Lanka. The project involved extracting structured location data from Arabic-language death records and developing machine learning tools to improve record linkage for large human rights datasets. This work contributes to evidence-based advocacy and documentation in conflict settings.

  • As part of the CyberRwanda initiative, which offers digital health and economic education to teens, a student developed systems to evaluate program effectiveness. Work included designing KPI dashboards, integrating Google Analytics, and automating engagement tracking. The project addressed challenges in data quality and alignment across platforms, reinforcing the role of ethical analytics in international youth development.

At the Environmental Defense Fund, we aim to use the best available scientific research to reduce emissions of air pollutants and greenhouse gases. Students affiliated with CAIDE were willing to take on open-ended projects and pursue directions that previously seemed out of reach within traditional research at EDF, such as automated image curve extraction and manipulation.
