Different Paths, One Purpose: Meet McAuliffe Honor Society Inductee Kimberly Perez ’28
Kimberly Perez came to law school after working as a legal assistant, where she witnessed firsthand how attorneys guide clients through complex moments in their lives. That experience, combined with a deep curiosity about how law weaves through everyday life, inspired her to pursue a JD.

Biggest surprise about your first year?
The ability to get involved and collaborate with classmates in student organizations and law journals. Before law school, I imagined it would be a place where I would not have much time outside of the classroom. Although you are extremely busy with juggling your course load and studying, I have found that there is time to meaningfully participate and get involved.
Share a law school experience that has impacted you significantly.
Attending Judges of Color in the Fall was an experience that stuck with me; the event highlighted that while the journey to law school looks different for every person, the key to building a strong career is resilience, hard work, and passion. Torts was also a class that left a strong impression because we learned how to “think like a lawyer” when analyzing complex fact patterns.
How has USF supported your success throughout your first year?
The support, guidance, and encouragement I’ve received from the Office of Career Services throughout the Fall and Spring semesters have been particularly key in preparing me for summer job opportunities. Inside and outside the classroom, the accessibility of the professors and teaching assistants has allowed me to gain a better understanding of concepts by working through material 1:1.
Your plans after law school?
In five years, I see myself working as a transactional attorney in California with a focus on business/corporate and real estate. USF Law is helping me achieve this goal by providing career counselors dedicated to helping me succeed, mentorship opportunities through student organizations, and the ability to explore my interests by providing an extensive course list covering the fields I am passionate about.
About the McAuliffe Honor Society
Each spring, USF School of Law honors exceptional first-year students with an invitation to join the McAuliffe Honor Society. Named after USF alumnus Florence M. McAuliffe, a founding partner of the San Francisco firm Heller Ehrman White and McAuliffe LLP, the society recognizes outstanding academic achievement in the first semester of law school. Inductees receive a scholarship and gain access to mentorship and opportunities to connect with faculty and alumni across the legal community.
