The Don Reid Scholarship will send up to 5 current USF students from the College of Arts and Sciences to Seoul, South Korea to participate in Sogang University’s International Summer Program.

Successful applicants will receive a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to engage with Korea and return with a deep cultural understanding of its history, people, and culture.  Sogang’s International Summer Program is a four-week program designed for students who want to improve their conversational Korean skills and knowledge of Korean culture and history. This merit-based scholarship will award successful applicants up to $5000 to cover the following costs:

  • Full tuition at Sogang’s International Summer Program  
  • Roundtrip economy class airfare to Seoul (up to $1500 max)
  • Ground Transportation (to and from airport in Seoul)
  • Lodging in Sogang University’s dormitory
  • A per diem for food expenses while in the program
  • Cultural Activities Fee

  • To apply, students must be currently enrolled in an ongoing degree under the College of Arts and Sciences as:

    • Undergraduate Students 
      • Rising juniors and seniors 
    • Graduate Students: 
      • Rising 2nd-year students

    • Here are the travel proposal guidelines due April 1. Early submissions are recommended. For questions or assistance contact Allyn Nobles (nobles@usfca.edu) at the Center for Global Education.  
    • Letter of support from the Center for Pacific Asia Studies  

    For undergraduate students:

    1. No-credit needed, but eligible to receive scholarship: Must follow the same travel proposal guidelines as graduate students.  
      1. Deadline is April 1, but early submissions are recommended. 
    2. Credits needed: Schedule an appointment with Allyn to discuss the following:
      1. Meet eligibility requirements to study abroad (junior standing of at least 64 credits, 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA, and pass disciplinary clearance) 
      2. Discuss procedure to have Sogang summer courses pre-approved
      3. Submit an External Summer abroad USF pre-application, due March 1
      4. Attend a pre-departure meeting with the Center for Global Education
    • Scholarship Awards are contingent upon students being accepted into the Sogang International Summer Program
    • Students are required to take 2 courses at Sogang
    • Take 2 classes at Sogang University (1 Korean language course and 1 non-language course)
    • Participate in all Sogang University field trips
    • Meet the donor before you leave at send off-event
    • Write a thank you letter to the donor talking about your experience in Korea 
    • Write 500 words for a blog post
    • Take pictures so that we can post them on our social media
    • Visit our office to receive a Center t-shirt and allow us to take a headshot for our social media
    • Attend our info session to learn more details about the program
    • Program Dates: July 1st - Jul 26, 2024
    • Scholarship Application Deadline: November 1
    • Faculty Recommendation Form Deadline: November 1
    • In-person interviews: Mid-November
    • Scholarship Awards Announced:  Early December
    • Sogang International Summer Program Application Deadline: by the end of December (Space is limited so students are encouraged to apply earlier if possible. Note this is earlier than the deadline on Sogang’s website.)
    • USF Study Abroad - Summer External Pre-application: March 1
      • For undergraduate students seeking to earn summer transfer credits from Sogang University
