Who We Are

Image
Clarence B. Jones and Jonathan Greenberg

Our work is firmly rooted in Martin Luther King, Jr’s moral leadership and the direct lineage we have inherited throughout Co-Founder and Director Emeritus Dr. Clarence B. Jones, as lawyer, strategic advisor, draft speechwriter, and close friend to Dr. King.

Co-Founder and Director Jonathan D. Greenberg taught international, communal, and interpersonal conflict resolution at Stanford for thirty years, and he has worked side-by-side with Dr. Jones for many years.

Going forward, we are proud to welcome School of Management Professor Allegra Chen-Carrel, our inaugural INSJ Faculty Fellow in Civic Discourse; Philosophy Professor Ronald R. Sundstrom, our inaugural King/ Jones Faculty Fellow; and Politics Professor Stephen Zunes, our inaugural Daniel Greenberg Fellow in Interfaith Nonviolence.

We are deeply grateful to the USF Office of the Provost for its dedicated support, to Dr. Sabrina Kwist, Associate Vice Provost, who has assumed administrative leadership to coordinate our work across USF, and to our Institute’s distinguished Leadership Council, for their strategic guidance.

Our Partners

We could not accomplish our work without our steadfast USF partners, including the Black Achievement, Success and Engagement Initiative (Dr. Emille Lawrence, director); the Joan and Ralph Lane Center for Catholic Social Thought and the Ignatian Tradition (Dr. Erin Brigham, director); the Loyola House Jesuit Community (Patrick Lee, S.J., rector); the Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common Good; the Office of Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ADEI, Dr. Sabrina Kwist, director); the Office of the Provost (Dr. Eileen Fung, provost); Peace and Justice Studies (Dr. Sadia Saeed, faculty director); the Program in Jewish Studies and Social Justice (Dr. Aaron Hahn Tapper, director); University Council for Jesuit Mission; and University Ministry (Donal Godfrey, S.J., university chaplain).

Our impact is powerfully magnified by our extraordinary community partners, who further Dr. King’s legacy of creative nonviolence in their work every day, especially: Alive & Free: the Prescription to End Violence and Change Lives (Dr. Joe Marshall, founder); The Algebra Project, Cambridge MA (Ben Moynahan, director); Ayudando Latinos A Soñar (ALAS), Half Moon Bay (Dr. Belinda Hernandez Arriaga, executive director); Faithful Fools, SF Tenderloin (Silena Layne, Steward of Community); the Haight Street Art Center (Kelly Harris, executive director); NAACP, SF Branch (Rev. Dr. Jonathan Butler, president); Pace e Bene Nonviolence Service, (Dr. Ken Butigan, strategist); San Francisco Interfaith Council (Michael G. Pappas, executive director); Young People’s Project, Cambridge, MA (Maisha Moses, director).
