Founded in 2019, the USF Institute for Nonviolence and Social Justice (INSJ) is the leading university-based research, teaching, and advocacy center dedicated to investigating and furthering nonviolence education in the context of Jesuit community-based service and the intergenerational legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We study, teach and promote Dr. King's philosophy and practice of interfaith nonviolence and civil resistance to overcome injustice, to preserve our democracy, and to secure human rights for all.

Letter From the Director

Jonathan Greenberg

It has been a great honor to have co-founded the USF Institute for Nonviolence and Social Justice (INSJ) with Dr. Clarence B. Jones in 2019, and to have served as the institute’s director since 2020.

Dr. Jones and I are immensely grateful for the generous support of USF leadership, faculty and staff colleagues, our students and student interns, our community partners throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond, and over 2,500 donors, without whom our work and outreach would not have been possible.

Your dedicated partnership has enabled us to convene transformative nonviolence education programs here at USF, and to help empower grassroots community, religious, refugee, peace, and human rights organizations—in San Francisco and Half Moon Bay, and abroad, in Burkina Faso, Burma, Colombia, El Salvador, and Israel/Palestine. We warmly welcome your continued support and participation as we move forward to realize the beloved community Dr. King envisioned and called us to forge and sustain.
