Students Explore Careers in the Gaming Industry

On a career trek in November, 20 students visited Striking Distance Studios, a video game developer in San Ramon. This is one of several industry visits the Career Services Center organizes throughout the year to show students careers they might pursue.

The studio welcomed students with an office tour and a look at game development. Employees from the design, engineering, production, and art departments shared how they collaborate to bring a game from concept to launch.

“I got to talk to people who do character and background design, but also people in human resources,” said Frances Lynch ’25, a design major graduating this December. “It makes sense, because it’s a business, but you don’t realize how many career paths there are in a game studio.”

To Lynch, the highlight of the tour was the motion-capture stage, where developers demonstrated the tools they use to bring real-life actors into animation.

After the tour, students heard from a panel of four employees. Ananaya Sood ’28, a computer science major, said the employees encouraged them to explore as many opportunities as possible.

“I had never thought of going into gaming as a career, because it’s a pretty niche industry. But the best thing they told us was to put our foot in the door wherever we can.”
