Working at the Break of Dawn

Event staff positions are not for everyone. Races such as the San Francisco Marathon, which Roshan Gupta, ‘15, volunteered for last summer, usually get the runners going as dawn breaks. The morning of July 27th, 2014 saw Roshan reporting to work at 4:30 AM, because apparently setting up for 6,000-plus people to run a combined 170,000-plus miles through San Francisco takes effort, just like running the race.

Why do it? Seldom can a hopeful in the sports industry have too much experience, enthusiasm, or opportunities to network professionally. And, if that morning race day atmosphere is your kind of thing, there are often other thrills as well. Roshan, at least, is looking forward to working the event again this year.
