I know the transformative power of a Jesuit education because I have lived it. I have seen how cura personalis — the care for the whole person — changes lives.”
Fun Facts
- Grew up in San Francisco’s Mission Dolores and Outer Mission neighborhoods. Met Carol, wife of 40 years, in their fifth-grade classroom at St. John Catholic School in Glen Park. Went to Sacred Heart for high school.
- Loves cheering for Dons basketball — as an undergrad, tutored basketball players at their apartments, then watched them play at War Memorial.
- As an accounting professor at USF, taught Intro to Accounting to 49ers players (through a program developed with 49er executive Carmen Policy who wanted his players to have financial literacy). Remembers Keena Turner coming in and not being able to fit in a desk.
- Favorite books: Life: My Story Through History by Pope Francis, Solito by Javier Zamora, and The Tipping Point by Malcom Gladwell.
- Loves music — Motown, musical theatre, and classic Spanish trios.
- Stays active by biking and practicing yoga. Says biking gives him a sense of freedom and connection to the outdoors, and yoga helps him slow down, stay centered, and focus on balance both physically and mentally.
- As a child, was a professional singer who went by the name “Chavita.” His family was involved in mariachi music, bands, singing. He and his parents would go to music venues in the Mission in the late 1960s, and Salvador started performing. An executive from Columbia Records in Mexico City was scouting for artists and connected with Salvador. The Columbia executive asked him and his parents if he would make a demo. Ultimately he was signed by Columbia and made six albums.
- Mantras: Lead with purpose, listen with humility and Be present, be curious, be kind.
As the world grows more complex, there is a growing need for graduates who are not only intellectually capable, but who also reflect the care and empathy to respond to a broken world.”
