$1.25 Million Athletics Gift Invites Momentum with Matching Pledge
USF is announcing a generous $1.25 million anonymous commitment to the university's athletics programs, including a $500,000 pledge matching challenge that will establish the new Director of Athletics Leadership Fund, giving new Director of Athletics Brent Blaylock agility and flexibility as he takes the helm. The gift also includes $750,000 to strengthen USF men's basketball through the Bridge to Excellence initiative.
The Director of Athletics Leadership Fund pledge is a call to action to donors to help expand its impact. Every gift to the Director of Athletics Leadership Fund through Dec. 31, 2026, will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $500,000. The matching challenge creates the opportunity to generate $1 million in total new philanthropic investment that will strengthen USF Athletics and expand opportunities for USF student-athletes.
Blaylock said, “A gift of this magnitude inspires others. It shows what is possible. The intention is to provide a starting point — to motivate others to contribute, however they are able, at all levels of giving. I’ve been fortunate to meet many passionate people who envision USF competing at the highest level. This is the type of investment that is needed from our supporters — we all need to do more than ever before to see what’s truly possible for USF Athletics.”
“College athletics is in a state of constant change,” said Blaylock. “Having a discretionary fund allows us to quickly deploy funding to priorities that make an immediate impact, boosting how we compete — whether there’s a need for performance-related programming, coaching, retention support, or student-athlete development. This gives us the flexibility to act quickly and realize the massive potential of our athletics program.”
The Bridge to Excellence initiative supports institutionally administered student-athlete revenue sharing and program enhancements under evolving NCAA guidelines. The gift to men’s basketball will also provide a meaningful competitive boost to recruitment, retention, and the student-athlete experience within that program.
The anonymous donor said the decision to establish the challenge was rooted in a belief that transformational progress begins with leadership and shared commitment.
“I believe USF Athletics is entering an exciting new chapter, and I wanted to help create momentum from the very beginning,” the donor said. “My hope is that this commitment inspires others to invest in the future of our student-athletes and our programs.”
