I have over 38 years of nursing experience. I started on a neurology floor and quickly learned that my passion was for helping people experiencing behavior change as a result of mental illness. I started practicing in an inpatient psychiatric hospital treating adults, adolescents and children with behavior problems resulting from mental illness. After practicing for 10 years in this field, I pursued higher education in order to understand the etiology of mental illness and to help develop preventative models of care. My dissertation was to test and develop prevention programs that promote secure attachment for infants in the first year of life. My current research program is implementing and testing nursing interventions that promote recovery in adults experiencing mental illness. USF started the CNL track of the MSN program in 2004, graduating our first class in 2006. Once I learned about the CNL role, I became a believer that the CNL role was going to be instrumental in reforming healthcare. I was Chair of the MSN Department for eight years and have served as the Director of the RN-MSN program at the additional campus locations.
