by Garrett Starr, Office of Development Communications

USF faculty, supporters, and community members were joined by foreign dignitaries and California State Senator Scott Wiener at this month's Center for Asia Pacific Studies Relaunch Celebration.

USF’s Center for Asia Pacific Studies is bringing energy and momentum into the new school year, highlighted by a relaunch event on the Hilltop on October 3. The evening, in partnership with the Center for Business Studies and Innovation in Asia-Pacific, provided space for food and conversation surrounding a diverse speaking program. The keynote address was given by film producer and President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Janet Yang. Provost Eileen Fung was joined by fellow presenters USF President Salvador D. Aceves ’83, EdD ’95, Senator Wiener, USF Trustee and Chair of the Executive Advisory Board, Nora Wu, Director of the Center for Asia Pacific Studies, Wei Y. Menkus, multiple current students, and a panel made up of international business experts.

Provost Fung said, “As a first-generation immigrant woman pursuing education as a profession, I was drawn as a young scholar to the University of San Francisco not only for its Jesuit Catholic mission, but also because of its commitment to global perspectives and international partnerships, especially with Asia Pacific. Nearly 30 years later, I remain passionate about advancing this work and carrying forward the university’s vision of internationalization and cross-cultural education.”

Numerous locally based foreign leaders and consuls general were in attendance, with the Honorable Lim Jung-taek, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in San Francisco, accepting the Magis Global Leadership Award in place of awardee and USF supporter Donald F. Ried.

Throughout the evening, a prevalent theme was the importance of building and maintaining social, political, and economic “bridges” or “friendships” across the Pacific, San Francisco’s unique role as a conduit for those relationships, and the impact the two university centers make as promoters of cultural exchange.

USF is grateful for the event’s visionary sponsor, Nora Wu, Trustee Emeritus S. Timothy Kochis and Penelope Wong for their leadership sponsorship, and a host of community sponsors for making the engaging and intellectual affair possible.
