The Game They Never Played

—New in USF Magazine—

The 1951 Dons is arguably one of the best college football teams of all time. They had a perfect season — nine wins, no losses, no ties— and the players were so talented, the National Football League drafted nine of them and named three to its Hall of Fame, a record for one college team.

Yet, the team’s greatest victory came from a game it never played. The ’51 Dons’ unwavering friendship, and integrity created a legacy that is more powerful today than it was a half century ago.

More than 60 years later, the team that was “untied, undefeated, and uninvited” is finally getting its due.

Their story, their legacy, and the ESPN documentary honoring them is in the Summer 2014 issue of USF Magazine.
