Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., Will Speak at USF Commencement

Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., the Jesuit-educated public health leader who played a prominent role during the COVID-19 pandemic, will be recognized by USF with an honorary degree and will give the commencement address to the humanities and sciences graduates at 9 a.m. May 16 in St. Ignatius Church.
As the longtime director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, chief of the Laboratory of Immunoregulation at the National Institutes of Health, and a physician with NIH, Dr. Fauci, now retired, has served America’s public health needs for more than a half century. He was chief medical adviser to the president during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Last May, Dr. Christine Grady, a nurse-bioethicist who is married to Dr. Fauci, received an honorary degree from the School of Nursing and Health Professions.
The 166th commencement ceremonies at USF are May 15, 16, and 17, with 2,135 graduates receiving degrees from the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education, the School of Management, the School of Law, and the School of Nursing and Health Professions. Overall, 34 percent of the graduates are first in their families to earn college degrees.
Ann Zwicker Kerr, mother of Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr and an advocate for international education at UCLA who describes herself as a lifelong student of the Middle East, is also being recognized with an honorary degree by USF. She will give the commencement address to graduate students at the College of Arts and Sciences commencement at 3 p.m. on May 16.
The School of Nursing and Health Professions commencement is 6 p.m. May 15. Dr. Terry T. Fulmer, an expert in geriatrics and president of the John A. Hartford Foundation, is an honorary degree recipient and will deliver the commencement address.
The College of Arts and Sciences commencement for undergraduate arts and social science students is noon May 16. Sister Norma Seni Pimentel, M.J., president and CEO of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley will receive an honorary degree and speak to graduates.
At 6 p.m. May 16, Janet E. Helms, PhD, the Augustus Long Professor Emerita at Boston College, will receive an honorary degree and address the School of Education graduates.
Commencement for the School of Management undergraduates is at 9 a.m. May 17, and Thomas E. Malloy ’61, chairman emeritus of the USF Board of Trustees and founder of Trench Shoring Company, is receiving an honorary degree and will address graduates.
At noon May 17, the School of Management professional bachelors and graduate students will be addressed by honorary degree recipient Noni Sri Ayati Purnomo MBA ’97, president commissioner of Blue Bird Group Holding.
The School of Law commencement is at 3 p.m. May 17. The Hon. Benjamin T. Reyes II, judge of the Superior Court, State of California, Contra Costa County, will give the commencement address to graduates.
