American Lawyer Recognizes McCarthy

“To say J. Thomas McCarthy wrote the book on trademark law is accurate, but something of an understatement,” The American Lawyer magazine said in its Sept. 9 issue. “The book in question is actually a seven-volume treatise that has been cited more than 3,000 times in judicial opinions.”

The magazine noted a study by the McCarthy Institute to be published in November that tracks the sale of trademarks by search engine companies to determine whether purchasers use them to mislead consumers or hurt copyright holders.

Other individuals named by The American Lawyer include U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy; Chief Trademark Counsel Terri Yun-Lin Chen, Google, Inc.; U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont); and Chief Patent Counsel Richard Lutton Jr., Apple Inc.
