Oberstone Article Sets Reprint Record

by Joel Oberstone/Gene Thomas

We’re very excited to share the latest news from Professor Joel Oberstone of our Analytics and Technology faculty.  Here’s a letter he sent us:
Letter to the Editor:

In the age of shameless self-promotion I'm happy to let my very select group of supporters know that my last JQAS (JOURNAL OF QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS IN SPORTS) publication, Uncovering Europe’s Best Goalscorers from the 2009-2010 Season, is now the #1 most requested reprint.  (editor’s note:  it was #5 just last week when we wrote our previous article)

I am told that this is the first time that a journal article in JQAS achieved this level of popularity and interest so quickly —less than three weeks to get into the top slot. At $15 a pop for my reprints, I'm anticipating that in appreciation for these revenues, I will be given a two-week, all expense paid vacation to Martinique. I can't wait. Yeah. Right.

Enjoy this with me and my very proud and grateful affiliation with our University.

I'm off to England in about one week with research talks at Opta Data (largest game data analysis collection organization in the world) and with the Director of Player Personnel at the Chelsea Football Club.
I'm also very excited about giving a paper at the 3rd Annual International Conference at Mathematics in Sports at Salford University, UK (Manchester) where I've been invited to present the player evaluation methodology I've been working on for the past 10 years called MAP—Multi-Attribute Performance Model. The developers of the Actim Index and Castrol Index will be there to contest my methods.  I’ll be chairing one of the sessions, so it should be “lively” as they say in England.

Best regards,

Joel
