The Financial Literacy Initiative is designed to advance financial freedom and economic liberation for middle school youth from multiply-marginalized communities. By developing and implementing a culturally relevant and critically contextualized financial literacy program, we ensure that learning connects to the lived experiences of BIPOC youth.

Youth Outcomes

Our program helps young San Franciscans to identify and master financial literacy skills and knowledge to use in their everyday lives. By expanding financial vocabulary young people can understand and begin to participate in financial decision-making confidently. Students learn, explore and access resources that inspire a path toward financial autonomy and sustainability.

Through this program, participants will:

  • Expand financial vocabulary to confidently engage in financial conversations
  • Identify practical financial skills and resources for everyday life
  • Critically examine how financial and economic systems can exploit and mislead consumers
  • Understand how racism and other forms of oppression maintain financial inequality
  • Access resources and inspiration that promote financial autonomy and long-term sustainability

Work Together to Build Financial Futures

This initiative is a collaboration among USF’s School of Education, School of Management, the Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common Good, and community-rooted educational leaders. Together, we are building a year-round, multi-part financial literacy program that integrates directly into the offerings of youth-serving organizations across the city. Each curriculum is co-designed to align with the priorities of these organizations and the needs of their youth.

Inspire Youth Toward a Path of Financial Sustainability

I gained the opportunity to engage with communities that traditionally have limited access to financial education. The program not only refined my ability to communicate complex financial concepts at base level, but also strengthened my leadership and public speaking skills.”
