Educating graduate students to provide management solutions to environmental problems using innovative, interdisciplinary approaches in an environmentally just manner.
USF’s Master of Science in Environmental Management (MSEM) trains students for careers in environmental agencies, consulting firms, and nonprofit organizations, incorporating a comprehensive mix of science and policy courses. The MSEM program gives students the scientific background to deal with environmental problems, and an understanding of social, economic, and regulatory issues that guide solutions to these problems.
The program offers an extensive alumni network, with over 1000 graduates since its start in 1979. Our graduates hold positions in federal, state, and local agencies, major consulting firms, corporations, and nonprofit organizations around the Bay Area and throughout the world.
The master’s project is a literature-based synthesis that allows students to develop their expertise based on an environmental research problem of their choice. Rather than conducting original research, students become subject matter experts on a contemporary topic related to environmental management and produce a written report and oral presentation that presents their results. Environmental Management projects from recent graduates are posted on USF’s scholarship repository.
