Writing, MFA

In the Master of Fine Arts in Writing program, you'll refine your craft through workshops, literature seminars, individual mentorship, and conversations with a community of writers. Work closely with faculty who know your writing and your goals. Since 1986, students have come to USF to grow as writers while taking advantage of San Francisco's literary culture.

Apply Now for Fall 2027

The Fall application is open. The priority application deadline is January 15.

How Do Workshops and Seminars Work?

In two years, you'll take workshops and literature seminars in fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. Read closely, discuss craft, and apply what you learn to your own writing. In small, in-person classes led by working writers, you'll receive thoughtful feedback, build relationships with faculty and classmates, and strengthen your voice as a writer.

Is an MFA the Right Next Step for My Writing?

Writers shape how the world thinks, feels, and acts. Being a writer starts with curiosity, creativity, and inspiration— whether you want to compose stories for future generations, spark cultural conversations, or build imaginary worlds readers can escape into. Turning that spark into a writer’s life takes craft, mentorship, community, and dedication. A Master of Fine Arts in writing gives you the guidance, structure, and momentum you can’t get on your own. You’ll sharpen your voice, deepen your thinking, and connect with a vibrant community of collaborators and champions.
