San Francisco Urban Teacher Residency — Bilingual Authorization Pathway
The University of San Francisco partners with the San Francisco Urban Teacher Residency (SFUTR) to offer a specialized residency pathway for candidates pursuing the Bilingual Authorization (BILA). This program is designed to prepare teachers to serve multilingual learners in San Francisco’s diverse urban schools through a yearlong, immersive clinical experience. Residents work alongside an experienced mentor teacher while completing credential coursework at USF that is intentionally integrated with daily classroom practice.

Earn While You Learn
SFUTR follows a residency model grounded in apprenticeship and supported practice. Over the course of the year, residents gradually take on increased teaching responsibility while receiving ongoing coaching, mentorship, and feedback.
Residents:
- Work in a full-year placement with an experienced mentor teacher
- Participate in a cohort-based learning community
- Engage in coursework aligned to their classroom experience
- Receive intensive coaching and professional support
Residents in the program also receive a $30,000 stipend, helping to make this pathway more financially accessible while completing the credential and master’s program.
Teaching Commitment
In return for the financial and programmatic support provided through SFUTR, residents commit to teaching in San Francisco public schools in hard-to-staff schools and subject areas for a minimum of four years following completion of the program.
