Mathematical Foundations for Data Science

Introductory Course

Gain essential calculus and linear algebra skills in this 7-week, hands-on course designed to build confidence in solving real-world data problems.

The Mathematical Foundations for Data Science Certificate provides a structured introduction to these core concepts, focusing on their practical applications in data science, machine learning, and advanced technical studies.

What Will I learn?

  • Learn key concepts from limits and derivatives to multivariable calculus.
  • Master fundamental linear algebra topics including vectors, matrices, determinants, and eigenvalues.
  • Explore practical applications in optimization, machine learning, and data representation.

Is This Program Right for You?

This program is ideal for:

  • Professionals in fields like finance, engineering, and computer science seeking to expand their mathematical expertise.
  • MS in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence applicants needing to meet calculus and linear algebra prerequisites.
  • Students from non-mathematical backgrounds preparing for a graduate or PhD program, as well as those looking to strengthen their mathematical foundation for advanced coursework in data science and other adjacent fields.

Jason Meintjes

Jason Meintjes is a recent graduate of the master’s program at San Francisco State University, where he worked on a thesis in moduli spaces under Dr. Emily Clader. Before that, he completed his BA with honors at Williams College, where he had the fortune of participating in the prestigious SMALL research program and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. But his educational journey all really started at Long Beach City College, where he rediscovered education after a long break as a musician and professional photographer. Jason has a particular interest in all things algebraic and geometric and has researched in continued fractions over non-Euclidean imaginary quadratic fields, topological data analysis, chip-firing games on graphs, tropical geometry, and the moduli space of curves. Outside of teaching, Jason enjoys rock climbing and running.
