Professional Communication Alumna Takes Career to the Next Level
Lisa Schoonerman ’23 always felt a pull toward communications. The pandemic became the catalyst for her to pursue a Master's in Professional Communication at USF.

Lisa studied communications as an undergraduate. As her career path took her from legal information publishing to CEO to director of training for research teams, she noticed the aspects of her work that she found most engaging centered around connecting with people and crafting effective messages. The idea of earning a master's degree was always present, but the timing never felt right. The pandemic, however, brought a significant shift in perspective. Observing the role of clear and empathetic communication during a crisis solidified her desire to formally study the field.
As a MAPC student at USF, Lisa appreciated the flexible coursework, which allowed her to continue working while pursuing her degree. She admired the diversity of students of different ages, professional backgrounds, and life experiences. She gained valuable perspectives from international students and those entering MAPC directly from undergraduate studies. Lisa also connected with veterans and individuals with extensive careers.
She chose Strategic Communication as her concentration, which supported her interests and her work responsibilities. Lisa chose electives that built her technical skills and complemented the strategy and leadership curriculum. Digital Storytelling, taught by Professor Leigh Meredith, became a favorite. Lisa gained knowledge in areas from persona development to video editing and podcast creation. Larry Kamer’s Leadership class also left an impression. His teaching, drawing from his own experience and incorporating insights from top industry guest speakers, was impactful and practical. The program offered a blend of traditional academic faculty and working communications industry professionals, which Lisa described as “the best of both worlds.”
Lisa has now assumed the role of Director of Internal Communication and Strategic Initiatives in the School of Dentistry at UCSF. She said USF's MAPC program provided her with the necessary credentials and the confidence to pursue more senior-level positions. For people considering USF’s MAPC, Lisa offers this recommendation: “Two words – do it!”
