Meet Devyn Brewer ’27

Where are you from and what is your background?
I am ‘born and raised’ in San Leandro, CA. I grew up playing and watching soccer, attending women's Stanford and Cal soccer games as they were the most accessible in the Bay Area. After graduating from UC Santa Cruz, I lived and worked in Ireland for a year before coming back home to start focusing on my career goals.
Why did you apply for this graduate program and decide to study at USF?
I applied for the USF sport management graduate program because I had heard so many great things about the program. Everyone says that working in the sports industry is all about knowing people, and I believed that this program would give me the ability to meet people and make meaningful connections. I loved that there was such a great program close to home and a plethora of opportunities and internships that would be available to me because of the program.
What impacts has the Dean's Scholarship had on your ability to further your studies?
I am so incredibly grateful to receive this scholarship. The decision to attend graduate school was a difficult one, and being granted this scholarship makes it feel like I am doing the right thing - like I am where I'm supposed to be. Growing up with a single mom, I've always needed a little extra help in pursuing higher education, and this still rings true today. I am so excited to continue through the program and embrace any and every opportunity that is available to me.
What are your career ambitions?
I love women's sports and would love to end up working in women's sports, specifically women's soccer. While I don't think I'm interested in coaching, I am interested in being involved with team operations and development. Ultimately, I want to become a player care manager with an NWSL team. I also think it would be cool to work my way over to US Soccer and work with the USWNT.
What is something unique or interesting about you?
Three days after I graduated from undergrad, I hopped on a plane out of the country. I lived and worked in Ireland for a year and got the chance to learn all about Irish sport. I learned how to play Gaelic football, hurling, and handball. I also had a great time trying to figure out rugby, which I wasn't fully able to do, but it was so fun to watch.
Are You ELIGIBLE?
The Dean’s Scholarship recognizes a select group of incoming students in graduate programs, who the admission committees believe will make a substantial contribution to the programs. Recipients are selected based on merit. To be considered for the Dean's Scholarship, students must apply to their program by the program's priority deadline.
