Kevin Foiles’ story shows the power of dedication, service, and strategic communication. A veteran and active-duty reservist, he has successfully combined his military background with a developing career in emergency management, all while studying for his Master of Arts in Professional Communication (MAPC) at the University of San Francisco. His experience demonstrates how USF’s MAPC program is not just academic, but a transformative experience tailored to professionals like him.

Kevin’s path to the MAPC program was driven by a deep-seated desire to serve. Inspired by his parents’ dedication to public service, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, later transitioning to roles in public administration and emergency management. His experiences, from supporting at-risk youth to coordinating COVID-19 response and managing large-scale emergency operations, revealed a critical truth: even the most well-executed plans can falter without effective communication. This realization was cemented during a humanitarian mission in the Philippines, where he witnessed the profound impact of intentional dialogue and cultural awareness in crisis situations. Recognizing the need to master strategic communication to lead effectively, he returned to USF.

USF’s commitment to accommodating diverse student needs, particularly veterans and working professionals, stood out to Kevin. Having previously earned his Master’s in Public Administration (MPA) at USF, he knew firsthand the university's dedication to student support and real-world application. USF understands that students come with various life experiences, and works to accommodate every student's needs. The university offers flexible scheduling, online and hybrid classes, and resources tailored to veterans, allowing them to balance their studies with existing commitments. This understanding and flexibility is vital to students who are balancing work, family, and other commitments.

Kevin chose the Strategic Communication concentration, recognizing its direct relevance to his demanding field. In emergency management, clear, timely, and culturally responsive communication is paramount. He appreciates USF’s mission-driven approach, the faculty’s real-world expertise, and the collaborative learning environment. One piece of advice from a USF professor, “Get closest to the people closest to the problem,” resonated deeply, emphasizing the importance of empathy and community engagement. “That quote stuck with me. It’s a reminder that the best solutions are not designed in isolation — they come from listening, proximity, and empathy,” he says.

One of Kevin’s most memorable experiences was a Crisis Communication class that pivoted to analyze real-time international conflicts and campus protests. The insightful discussions and diverse perspectives highlighted the program's relevance and the importance of empathetic communication in high-stakes situations. He also values the camaraderie and support within his cohort, particularly the global perspectives brought by his classmates, which broadened his understanding of cross-cultural communication.

His role as an Emergency Services Analyst II with San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department is directly influenced by his MAPC studies. The program has sharpened his ability to navigate risk and crisis communication, design effective public messaging, and engage with diverse populations. Finally, Kevin emphasizes the lasting friendships and networking opportunities he’s gained, noting the program’s global diversity has enriched his professional perspective. Kevin’s positive experience at USF underscores the program’s value for professionals in high-pressure, community-focused fields. The MAPC program has not only enhanced his skills but also deepened his sense of purpose. For prospective students, especially those with backgrounds in public service or emergency management, Kevin’s journey is a compelling testament to the transformative power of USF’s MAPC program.
