Meet Ivona Pujic ’27

Where are you from and what is your background?
I’m from the city of Winnipeg, located in the heart of the Canadian prairies. Growing up, I always gravitated towards STEM subjects, finding it fascinating by how our combined knowledge and innovations are the reason why we exist. This led me to complete my B.Sc (Hons.) in Biochemistry at the University of Manitoba in 2022. I had several research opportunities during my undergrad where I’ve received awards and even had my own published article. This inspired me to build my career and make the leap to study at the University of San Francisco.
Why did you apply for this graduate program and decide to study at USF?
I spent a lot of time exploring graduate programs at various institutions, both in Canada and in the States, and I found that the Professional Sciences Master’s (PSM) in Biotechnology offered by USF would bring me closer to the career path I envision. While having a solid foundation in STEM is a great asset, understanding business and regulatory frameworks, in addition to effectively communicating across disciplines, are essential. Throughout my application process and speaking with faculty, I’ve realized the genuine support and care that the institution has for their graduate students. Choosing a graduate program is a serious commitment, and moving to a different country is a life-changing event, however, I’m excited and confident in choosing USF.
What impacts has the Dean's Scholarship had on your ability to further your studies?
The Dean’s Scholarship has helped me tremendously in funding my education and alleviating some of the stress of supporting myself. I believe it will allow me to direct my focus on my studies, and it will bring me to connect with accomplished individuals in the field. It also feels gratifying that my diligence, perseverance, and initiative are recognized, further motivating me to be my best self. For these reasons, I’m deeply thankful for receiving this award.
What are your career ambitions?
While I’ve been fortunate in securing research experience, I realized I am better suited for a role in management to oversee projects or be involved in regulatory affairs. Ultimately, I hope to improve access by helping new treatments reach people more quickly without compromising safety, while acting as a mediator between science and policy. I enjoy engaging with and giving back to my community. Having frequently worked with vulnerable populations, I’ve witnessed the importance for individuals to have a voice in decisions that affect them as well as having an advocate that does the same. I strive to bring these values in my future career.
What is something unique or interesting about you?
For a short time, I worked at a radio station as an assistant announcer and operator! As intimidating as it was to talk on air, I overcame the fear and to my surprise, found an interest in broadcasting that I hope to explore more in the future.
Are You ELIGIBLE?
