John Hutchens

John Hutchens grew up in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina.  He became interested in mathematics while attending NC State University as an undergraduate.  After a few years working various jobs he returned to NC State to complete his PhD in mathematics.  He worked at universities in Arkansas and North Carolina before he and his family moved to the Bay Area in 2023.  His research is focused on linear algebra including combinatorial linear algebra and linear algebraic group theory.  He also has experience researching spatial graph theory, applications of machine learning in discrete math, and protein language models.
