30 Under 30: Community Engagement Director
The definition of immigrant — and the definition of illegal — is always determined not by what is fair but by who is in power.”

How did the program prepare you for your career?
Lauren Hill ‘12

"What I learned in the program has enabled me to bring my passion for social justice to a business context. Working in an industry predicated on the exploitation of resources and people across the world, the legacy of colonialism is important to acknowledge and address if we want to see real change in how we produce our textile products. My time at USF laid a foundation of knowledge that allows me to look at the issues of the apparel and textile industry from a broader systems perspective in my graduate studies and my work today."

"Its emphasis on social justice focused my thinking away from the purely analytical, and forced me to take a step back to challenge my own biases and preconceived notions of the world. I think this is a practice everyone who attends USF benefits from, through classes, extracurriculars, and conversation with friends and professors. This type of thinking reminds me to keep the beneficiary in mind at the end of the day, as helping individuals rise out of poverty is the overarching purpose of my work."
