Leadership should require an individual to be empathetic and encouraging. To engage constantly with others while simultaneously understanding one's personal motivations in doing so is to be an active leader.

Advice to First Year Students:

To find your passion, engage with everything that interests you. There most likely a strong reason for why that interest is there to begin with, so discover yourself.
