I think the College of Arts and Sciences is the heart of the university. For a hundred years we've been keeping alive this tradition, this Jesuit tradition of having and education centered around the liberal arts. It's grown, but it's also, in many ways remained committed to, the original mission educating hearts and minds to change the world in the Jesuit tradition. Past, present, and future, we have a community that believes in our mission. We have a community where people believe in the people. What I've always found at USF was a deep sense of a common meaning. People here live the mission. We educate students not just to be smart. We do that. Not just to be successful in their careers. We do that too. But we educate them to be able to think critically about their place in the world, the different social and economic circumstances that people face, and to go on and do work that transforms that world and makes it better for everyone. A centennial is 100 years of overlapping faculty and staff who are thinking about how to create the best possible environment. We are here to educate students. We are here to prepare the ethical leaders of the future. Students are looking for flexibility, flexible pathways, different modality of instruction, a more meaningful way to connect, and they're looking for support and inclusive practice for them to really understand the purpose of what they're learning to the work and the future that they're going to be leading. And that, to us, is the work of everybody on campus. But the college holds the core curriculum that helps students with these kind of skill sets and changing mentalities and and pathways. Every year we graduate a thousand undergraduate students, 500 graduate students, and they're bringing a commitment into their professional world. that they think about the work that they're going to be doing and its impacts. I think the centennial provides an opportunity to sort of step back and reexamine the tradition, reexamine our history, and think creatively about how it will apply in the present and in our future. we can be here for 2125 so long as we engage in the same kinds of commitments and practices that we've always had. I'm looking forward to the next 100 years. 100 Years of Igniting Hearts and Minds. 1925-2025 100 Years College of Arts and Sciences
