Federal Loans for Undergraduate Students

Federal Direct Loans

Federal Direct Subsidized Loans, Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans and Direct PLUS Loans are available from the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program.

To apply for a Federal Direct Loan, students must complete the FAFSA. Additional requirements will include the completion of online promissory notes and loan entrance counseling. Students must complete these requirements and be enrolled in classes before receiving their first Direct Loan disbursements.

Federal Perkins Loan

The Federal Perkins Loan Program offers deferred payment, deferred interest loans administered by the Financial Aid Office.

  • 5% interest per annum accrues and repayment begins 9 months after the borrower graduates, leaves school or drops below half-time enrollment.
  • FAFSA is required.
  • Funds will be offered first to aid applicants who file a timely application.
    • New students must file no later than February 1
    • Current students must file no later than March 2
  • Repayment period may be extended up to 10 years.

Nursing Student Loan

Nursing Student Loans are a deferred payment, deferred interest loan administered by the Financial Aid Office and funded by the Federal Department of Health and Human Services to assist students enrolled in nursing programs.

  • 5% interest per annum accrues and repayment begins 9 months after the borrower graduates, leaves school or drops below half-time enrollment.
  • FAFSA is required.
  • Funds will be offered first to aid applicants who file a timely application.
    • New students must file no later than February 1
    • Current students must file no later than March 2
  • Repayment period may be extended up to 10 years.

Borrowers should read the Student Loan Self-Certification instructions and submit a completed Student Loan Self-Certification form to the USF Office of Financial Aid. In addition, borrowers must be sent a series of loan disclosure forms before disbursement of the loan is allowed.
