A Career in International & Development Economics

A master's in international development and economics opens doors to an array of career opportunities. Here's a list of job roles you might pursue with this degree: 

  • Development Economist -  Research and analyze economic issues in developing countries to improve economic policies and development strategies.
  • Economic Analyst -  Analyze economic data, trends, and policies to provide insights for businesses, governments, or non-profit organizations.
  • International Development Consultant - Offer expertise to governments, NGOs, or international organizations to design and implement development projects and policies.
  • Policy Analyst - Analyze policies related to international development. Provide recommendations for improvements in areas like trade, aid, or economic development.
  • Project Manager (International Development) - Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of development projects in various sectors like healthcare, education, infrastructure, etc.
  • Research Analyst - Conduct economic research for think tanks, academic institutions, or research organizations. Focus on issues related to international development.
  • Impact Evaluator - Assess the impact of development projects and aid programs, determining their effectiveness and areas for improvement.
  • Development Officer - Work for NGOs or non-profits to raise funds, design strategies, and coordinate programs aimed at international development.
  • Microfinance Specialist - Work in microfinance institutions to develop and manage financial services for low-income individuals and small businesses in developing countries.
  • International Relations Officer - Focus on economic policies and relationships between countries by working for government agencies, diplomatic offices, or international organizations.


These roles may vary depending on the specific focus of the program, the skills acquired, and individual interests. The intersection of international development and economics provides a wide range of opportunities in both the public and private sectors, as well as within non-governmental and international organizations. In addition, many of our students continue on to receive a PhD in their chosen fields to pursue research and teaching positions at universities or to become senior policymakers at governmental or international organizations. Many students begin teaching at the community college level when they earn master’s degrees.
