University of San Francisco Appoints New Vice Provost for Strategic Enrollment Management
Michael Beseda selected to lead every phase of the enrollment process
SAN FRANCISCO (Aug. 18, 2016) — The University of San Francisco (USF) has named Michael Beseda vice provost for strategic enrollment management, where he will lead an office of more than 75 professionals achieving success in supporting improvements in selectivity, yield, retention, and graduation rates while maintaining USF’s commitment to a diverse student community. The appointment is effective Oct. 10, 2016.
Beseda is the vice president for enrollment and university communications at Willamette University in Oregon, where he has worked since 2013. During his time at Willamette, Beseda revamped enrollment marketing strategy and communication materials, as well as enhanced collaboration among previously disparate units. Recognized as a leader in efforts to create more inclusive admission practices and to align enrollment and marketing efforts with educational values, Beseda has served as a founding board member of the Education Conservancy, and was an initial member of Harvard University’s Turning the Tide initiative, an effort to reshape the college admissions process by promoting greater ethical engagement among aspiring students, and leveling the playing field for economically disadvantaged students.
Beseda will report to Donald Heller, provost and vice president of academic affairs for USF, and serve on USF President Paul J. Fitzgerald’s executive cabinet, providing vision and strategy to optimize USF’s current and future enrollment. “I am very pleased that Michael will be joining us to head our enrollment management efforts,” said Heller. “We had an extremely strong pool of candidates, and Michael stood out among them. His experience at Willamette will be a huge asset for USF, and he has a strong grounding in and understanding of Catholic higher education from his time at Saint Mary’s. I know that he will bring great skills and dedication to the leadership team at the university.”
Prior to Willamette, he served at Saint Mary’s College of California for more than three decades, beginning his career as an admissions counselor and advancing to vice president for college communications and vice provost for enrollment, a role he held from 2003-13.
“I look forward to working with the talented team in strategic enrollment management, Provost Heller, Fr. Fitzgerald, and the entire Don community to create a forward-looking, creative, and comprehensive enrollment management strategy and program that befits a Jesuit institution of USF’s prominence and excellence,” said Beseda.
Beseda holds a bachelor of arts from Saint Mary’s College, where he graduated summa cum laude, and a master of arts in world and comparative literature from San Francisco State University. He has also completed coursework at UC Berkeley for the PhD program in policy studies in higher education.
