Mary Booker Named Assistant Vice Provost at University of San Francisco

Mary BookerSAN FRANCISCO (May 4, 2016) — The University of San Francisco (USF) has named Mary Booker the Assistant Vice Provost for Student Financial Services. Booker will lead a 15-member staff that awards more than $238 million in student financial aid annually. She starts Aug. 1.

Booker comes to USF from Pomona College in Claremont Calif., where she has been Director of Financial Aid since 2008. Previously, she served as the Director of Financial Aid at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., and worked in the financial aid office at both Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and Oberlin College in Ohio.

“Mary has been a strong advocate for students who are historically underrepresented in higher education, and has devoted herself to helping make college accessible and affordable,” said USF Provost Donald Heller. “Her work dovetails very nicely with the Jesuit mission and values of the University of San Francisco, and I am extremely excited that she is joining our team to lead student financial services.”

Booker’s commitment to first generation and low-income students is a personal one. “My college education changed my life, it changed everything. It was huge,” Booker said. “Suddenly, I wasn’t limited by my background, and there were so many new possibilities. I was so grateful, because none of this would have happened without the help I received.”

Booker was also a soldier in the U.S. Army, and hopes to encourage other military veterans to earn their college degree. She served a tour of duty in Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm in 1990 and 1991, working as a supply specialist, and was also enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve for six years.

The university selected Booker following a national search that identified a pool of highly qualified candidates. At USF, Booker will also oversee the offices of Student Employment and Student Accounts, and will create educational programs that help families navigate the financial aid process.
