New Senior Director Named at USF’s Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common Good
SAN FRANCISCO (June 11, 2015) – The University of San Francisco’s Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common Good has selected David Donahue, PhD, as its senior director. The appointment is effective Aug. 1.
Donahue is the interim provost and associate vice provost at Mills College in Oakland, Calif., where he has worked for more than twenty years as a professor of education. He won the college’s Sarlo Prize for Teaching in 2005, and held the Metz chair for creativity and excellence in teaching in 2013.
As the McCarthy Center’s senior director, Donahue will report to the university provost, and is responsible for managing its staff, budget, and day-to-day operations. He will collaborate with civic, corporate, nonprofit, and philanthropic leaders to ensure the center’s financial sustainability, and raise its profile as a leader in community-engaged learning and research.
Donahue is a widely published scholar on topics that include service learning in higher education, human rights, diversity, and personal identity.
“I can think of no job that better brings together my experience, my research, and my commitment to helping build a strong community,” said Donahue. “I am thrilled by the opportunity to lead the McCarthy Center in its important mission, and help inspire and prepare USF students for lives and careers of ethical public service.”
Donahue co-facilitated a two-year fellows program on service learning to promote political engagement in 2007-09, sponsored by California Campus Compact and the Carnegie Foundation. He earned a doctorate in education at Stanford University, and is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Brown University with a BA in history. He lives in San Francisco and has a long history of community engagement in the Bay Area.
“Dr. Donahue is wonderfully qualified to carry forward the compelling vision of Leo T. McCarthy and advance the center’s mission and programs, both throughout the Bay Area, nationally, and internationally,” said Serra Falk Goldman, chair of the McCarthy Center board of advisors.
