Inside Higher Ed blogger Barbara Fister frequently finds inspiration from scholars in the prime of their professional lives. But this fall, she found it from an unexpected source: college freshmen.

Fister visited David Silver’s first-year seminar — an exploration of the history, mixed uses, and popular narratives of Golden Gate Park — and came away with some valuable lessons about engaging students just starting their academic careers.

“It was incredibly exciting to see in practice exactly what … things look like when a group of students seems so totally engaged,” writes Fister. “When it comes to lifelong learning, they’re off to a great start.”
