USF men’s basketball is one of only seven teams out of 358 in the NCAA that is undefeated — and it holds the best record this week at 10–0.

The team faces Grand Canyon University, with a 9–2 record, on Dec. 18. The Antelopes lead the Western Athletic Conference. The Dons lead the West Coast Conference.

The game will be played in the Footprint Center, home of the Phoenix Suns.

“I’ve never coached in there before, so that’s going to be really fun,” said Coach Todd Golden, who grew up in Phoenix and went to games at the arena. He talked about it in an interview after the Dec. 8 victory over Fresno State University.

USF came back against Fresno State with 47 points in the second half, led by Jamaree Bouyea ’21, who was named West Coast Conference player of the week this week for the second week in a row. Bouyea, who holds a BS in business administration, was granted a fifth season by the NCAA due to the pandemic.

Golden said Fresno State was hoping to unseat USF from its undefeated record, and he expects the Dons will face that from other teams, too.

“They want to be the team that takes us off of this undefeated run we’re on,” he said.

USF played Grand Canyon last year and Golden called it “a war.” USF won, 68-65.

The day after the Grand Canyon game, USF will play Arizona State University. The Pac-12 Sun Devils have a 4-6 record.
