Lauren Kahn, Master of Public Administration ’12

Connecting Marginalized Communities to Affordable Healthcare

USF was the perfect symbiosis of success in government as well as nonprofit work.

Alumna Lauren Kahn MPA '12 describes helping others as a “built-in value” that she uses every day in her work as Director of Public Affairs at HealthRIGHT 360.

Early in her career, Lauren joined HealthRIGHT 360 — an organization dedicated to helping those in need find affordable healthcare. In 2010 she took her career to the next level and enrolled in the Master of Public Administration program at University of San Francisco (USF).

According to Lauren, USF was the perfect symbiosis of “success in government as well as nonprofit work”. After graduating, Lauren was quickly promoted at HealthRIGHT 360, where she now works as the Director of Public Affairs and Policy, dedicating each day to connecting marginalized communities to affordable healthcare.

Before attending USF, Lauren explored the BioTech industry, volunteered at a prison, and even considered being a lawyer. One thing was clear and constant: “I knew that I wanted to build a career serving people who had been most marginalized by society.”

So, in 2007, Lauren joined HealthRIGHT 360 — a nonprofit provider of primary care, substance use disorder treatment, and mental health services serving over 38,000 homeless and low-income Californians each year.

Enrolling in the Master of Public Administration program at USF, Lauren learned the skills and knowledge to help her to make a deep and lasting impact in public administration.

For instance, Lauren learned to convey “context, clarity, and brevity” in her writing.

In graduate school, we had a lot of assignments with very short page length limits. Over time, I learned to pare down an argument to exactly what the reader needs to know.

When she graduated in 2012, Lauren was immediately promoted within HealthRIGHT 360. “The MPA program unlocked my career path for me. HealthRIGHT 360 saves lives, reunites families, builds health, and gives hope in moments, sometimes long moments, of despair.”

Recently promoted once more, Lauren now serves as the organization's Director of Public Affairs and Policy. A Master’s in Public Administration has turned Lauren’s passion for helping others into a career reality.

She explains: “HealthRIGHT 360 is a labor of love, and I love it”.
