Career Development

Our students find that internships with leading Bay Area companies are the best way to immediately apply what they've learned in the classroom while enabling them to gain valuable experience and expand their professional network.

The following profiles highlight the experiences of five of our recent graduates during their USF internships in 2010-2011.

Michael Bertolina

Last summer I worked as a account management/business development intern at Anthem Worldwide - a strategic branding and design agency here in San Francisco.

I had a fantastic experience at Anthem. On my first day, I took a meeting with the Account Director and Managing Director and we set immediate expectations for open communication and they encouraged me to be vocal with my insights. I continually asked important questions around areas where I felt the company needed improvement. From this, I was able to expand my role and collaborate beyond my own department. I authored a new business development plan, spearheaded the implementation of new project management software, drafted a white paper (that ended up being published and converted into a webinar), and ran a SWOT analysis on the entire firm. This was all in addition to hands-on client-facing experience with large brands from Chevron to Titleist.

How was your internship/job useful to you?

I had been interested for some time in working in the agency setting and this internship gave me a solid jumping off point. I gained intimate knowledge in industry standards, lead sourcing and client acquisition, and inter-departmental coordination for the delivery of multiple creative deliverables.

Job/Internship Organization – Levi’s, Global Marketing Group

At the internship in Levi’s, I was involved in creating the marketing concept for the female market of Levis, and in building the promotional planning for the female community and in working with Marketing team in Japan to localize the marketing plan. I was able to learn how the headquarters of a company build their marketing strategy. When I worked in Hewlett-Packard Japan and Spencer Stuart Tokyo, we had to do just deploy and localize the marketing plan, which was already created at headquarters. It was great experience for me.

I also gained negotiation skills by searching for common ground between the American headquarters and the Branch office in Japan. Sometimes it was hard to find the point of compromise for both, my boss in SF and my contact point in Japan, however, through explaining about the differences in marketing situations and consumer behavior helped them to understand each other.

What I learned in the classes of Marketing Strategy and Social Media marketing in my MBA greatly helped me to conduct the project. Also, advice from classmates in my MBA helped me work with colleagues in Levis.

I built a lot of connections with people in Levis and PR companies in Japan through the internship. Even now my internship was over, I have kept in touch with some of them and met them in person when they visited San Francisco. They gave me a lot of useful advice for my career development.

Leila Dunning

I worked with the global marketing team and assisted with our customer reference program, success story write-ups and monthly newsletter. Knowledge gained from classes at USF including how to write a marketing plan, innovative concepts, and how to do business internationally has complemented my experience at NComputing. In addition I participated in the Dubai and Istanbul study tour that has provided me with the cultural and business implications of working abroad.

I have acquired valuable knowledge in global marketing and international business that will assist me in my future career endeavors.

Dan Stepchew

While in a full-time MBA program I am working to develop the company’s initial brand, pricing, sales objectives, and complete business plan. I also helped establish the launch and horizon roadmap for the company’s new platform, produced web videos, and completed a redesign of the firm’s core group of interactive product demos after being asked to continue working part time after the summer internship was over.

My internship at Scios360 gave me a unique opportunity to create a working business plan and go-to-market strategy for the firm. This enabled me to use my classroom learnings and translate it directly into real world experience. I gained experience that helped me to become a stronger candidate for post-graduation opportunities.
