HR Direct
  Happy New Year!
Welcome to the start of another year at USF. I hope you had a wonderful holiday season.

To kick off the new year, the Koret Center and Human Resources are pleased to announce the inaugural USF vs. SCU Fitness & Wellness Challenge, which will run through the month of February. We’d love for you to participate, and it’s easier than you might think!

In addition to reminding us about how we can avoid the flu this season, this issue of hrDirect covers a number of important payroll and benefits topics that require your attention this month.

We also present the schedule of HR Professional Development events planned for spring, and as an inspiration to us all, we showcase the creativity and generosity displayed by two USF departments over the holiday season.

On behalf of the team in Human Resources, I look forward to working with you through 2013.

Martha Peugh-Wade
Assistant Vice President, Human Resources

Join the inaugural USF vs. SCU Fitness & Wellness Challenge!

The inaugural USF vs. SCU Fitness & Wellness Challenge will run from February 1st through 28th, 2013.

Join us for the Kick-Off Event, Feb. 1st, from 11:30-1:30 p.m. in Fromm Hall.

Faculty and staff from USF and Santa Clara are invited to log their ‘activity time’ during the month of February to see which university is the most active. Being active in this challenge can mean anything from doing 15 minutes of gardening on the weekend, walking or running over your lunch break, taking a yoga or healthy cooking class, participating in a race - and everything in between!

Every minute counts in helping USF win this fun and healthy challenge, and all participants will get a prize!

Look out for this week’s email about how easy it is to join the challenge and details of our launch event on February 1st!

The Flu Season is Upon Us

The flu season is hitting us hard and strong, and reports from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are saying that it will be more severe than last year.
Human Resources was thrilled with the turnout of over 70 USF employees to the free flu shot clinic on Thursday January 17th, which was the 4th clinic held at USF this flu season.

The peak of the season, which usually happens in February, is yet to come, so please make sure you’re prepared. For more information about ways to protect yourself from the flu, please read on.

Review Your Paystub

Please take a moment to review your January paystub to ensure coverages and deductions for your benefits enrollments have been updated to reflect any changes you requested during Open Enrollment. If you have questions regarding your benefits enrollment(s), please email benefits@usfca.edu.

In addition to reflecting coverages and deductions, your net pay in 2013 may be different from your 2012 paycheck due to the following:
  • Social Security tax rate increase from 4.2% to 6.2% for wages up to a taxable wage limit of $113,700
  • State and federal tax withholdings increase for the highly compensated
  • Voluntary Disability Insurance (VDI) taxable wage ceiling increase (from $95,585 to $100,880)

Celebrating the generosity of the Holiday season

Congratulations to staff in ABS and ITS for their fantastic fundraising efforts in the lead-up to the 2012 holiday season.

In a ‘best of 3’ competition involving a food drive, fund raiser and holiday decorating competition, the first ever ABS vs ITS Holiday Challenge saw the two teams collectively raise cash donations of $1798 for Red Cross and Heifer International, collect 662 food items for distribution through St Anthony’s, and create two very festive office areas and a wonderful holiday spirit. ABS was deemed the overall ‘winner’ of the challenge, but everyone came out on top!

Well done.

2012 W-2 Wage and Tax Statement

From February 1st, employees can access their W-2 Wage and Tax Statements electronically via USF Connect (Go to: "Self-Service">Employee tab>"Tax Forms">"W-2 Wage and Tax Statement").

Hard-copy W-2 statements will also be automatically mailed to all employees who had taxable earnings in 2012, no later than January 31st.

If you do not receive your W-2 by February 11th or if you have questions regarding your W-2 or the W-2 process, please visit our W-2 Information Page or contact Payroll at 415-415-2430 or etimesheets@usfca.edu.

Spring 2013 HR Professional Development Calendar

To help with your professional development planning, HR has released a partial list of offerings for the spring semester. We will send periodic email updates as workshops are finalized and added.

At any time, you may access the full Spring Professional Development Calendar on the HR website.

Reminder: Spousal Benefits Surcharge

On January 14th, Human Resources sent all benefits-eligible employees a reminder about the introduction of the Medical Benefits Spousal Surcharge, and instructions on how to apply for a surcharge waiver.

The deadline for HR to receive waiver applications is February 15th, so if you are eligible for a waiver of the surcharge, and you have not yet applied, please do so as soon as possible.

For more information, please read the reminder you received on January 14th.
Employee Social Security Tax Rate Returns to 6.2%

The reduced 4.2% rate for employee Social Security taxes that was in effect for 2011 and 2012 has expired. The employee Social Security tax rate will return to 6.2% for 2013 wages up to the taxable wage limit of $113,700.

Consequently, employees’ net pay under the taxable wage limit will decrease accordingly. The maximum Social Security tax that an employee would pay will be $7,049.40 for 2013.
