To kick off the new year, the Koret Center and Human
Resources are pleased to announce the inaugural USF vs. SCU Fitness
& Wellness Challenge, which will run through the month of February.
We’d love for you to participate, and it’s easier than you might think!
In addition to reminding
us about how we can avoid the flu this season, this issue of hrDirect

Join the inaugural USF vs. SCU Fitness & Wellness Challenge!
The inaugural USF vs. SCU Fitness & Wellness Challenge
will run from February 1st through 28th, 2013
Join us for the Kick-Off Event, Feb. 1st, from 11:30-1:30 p.m. in Fromm Hall.
Faculty and staff from USF and Santa Clara are invited to
log their ‘activity time’ during the month of February to see which
university is the most active
. Being active
challenge can mean anything from doing 15 minutes of gardening on the
weekend, walking or running over your lunch break, taking a yoga or
healthy cooking class, participating in a race - and everything in
between! Every minute counts
in helping USF win this fun and healthy challenge, and all participants will get a prize!

The Flu Season is Upon Us
flu season is hitting us hard and strong, and reports from the Center
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are saying that it will be more
severe than last year.

thrilled with the turnout of over 70 USF employees to the free flu shot
clinic on Thursday January 17th, which was the 4th clinic held at USF
this flu season.

Review Your Paystub
take a moment to review your January paystub to ensure coverages and
deductions for your benefits enrollments have been updated to reflect
any changes you requested during Open Enrollment. If you have questions
regarding your benefits enrollment(s), please email firstname.lastname@example.org
In addition to reflecting coverages and deductions, your
net pay in 2013 may be different from your 2012 paycheck due to the
- Social Security tax rate increase from 4.2% to 6.2% for wages up to a taxable wage limit of $113,700
- State and federal tax withholdings increase for the highly compensated
- Voluntary Disability Insurance (VDI) taxable wage ceiling increase (from $95,585 to $100,880)
Celebrating the generosity of the Holiday season
Congratulations to staff in ABS and ITS for their fantastic fundraising efforts in the lead-up to the 2012 holiday season.
a ‘best of 3’ competition involving a food drive, fund raiser and
holiday decorating competition, the first ever ABS vs ITS Holiday
Challenge saw the two teams collectively raise cash donations of $1798
for Red Cross and Heifer International, collect 662 food items for
distribution through St Anthony’s, and create two very festive office
areas and a wonderful holiday spirit. ABS was deemed the overall
‘winner’ of the challenge, but everyone came out on top!
|2012 W-2 Wage and Tax Statement
From February 1st, employees can access their
W-2 Wage and Tax Statements electronically via USF Connect (Go to:
"Self-Service">Employee tab>"Tax Forms">"W-2 Wage and Tax
Hard-copy W-2 statements will also be automatically mailed to all
employees who had taxable earnings in 2012, no later than January 31st.
If you do not receive your W-2 by February 11th or if you have
questions regarding your W-2 or the W-2 process, please visit our W-2 Information Page or contact Payroll at 415-415-2430 or email@example.com.

|Reminder: Spousal Benefits Surcharge
On January 14th, Human Resources sent all
benefits-eligible employees a reminder about the introduction of the
Medical Benefits Spousal Surcharge, and instructions on how to apply for
a surcharge waiver.
The deadline for HR to receive waiver applications is February 15th, so if you are eligible for a waiver of the surcharge, and you have not yet applied, please do so as soon as possible.
For more information, please read the reminder you received on January 14th.
|Employee Social Security Tax Rate Returns to 6.2%
The reduced 4.2% rate for employee Social
Security taxes that was in effect for 2011 and 2012 has expired. The
employee Social Security tax rate will return to 6.2% for 2013 wages up
to the taxable wage limit of $113,700.
Consequently, employees’ net pay under the taxable wage limit will decrease accordingly. The maximum Social Security tax that an employee would pay will be $7,049.40 for 2013.
|New W-4 and DE-4 Tax Forms
With the new year comes a new set of state and
federal tax forms. New employees, or current employees wishing to update
their tax withholding information, can download the forms here:

2013 DE-4 (CA State Tax Withholding)
Once downloaded, you can print, complete and
return your withholdings forms to Payroll at any time throughout the
year. Payroll is located at LMM145.
|Verify Your Mailing Address
take a moment to verify your “Current” mailing address. You may access
and update your “Current” mailing address information online through
Employee Self Service.
your Current Address up-to-date will help ensure that you receive all
of your Payroll and HR documents, including your W-2.

|Enroll in Direct Deposit
If you are still receiving a paper check and
would like to upgrade to direct deposit, please complete and submit a
Direct Deposit Authorization Agreement form to Payroll (LM 145) or HR
(LM 339). The form may be downloaded at http://www.usfca.edu/hr/forms or obtained from the Payroll office.
By opting for direct deposit you can avoid lost
and delayed or stolen checks which may take up to ten (10) working days
for the University to cancel and reissue.
