Abstract:The saying “Data is the new oil” has become a cliché, and for a good reason. Recent advancements in data infrastructure have democratized the creation and transformation of data in organizations big and small. However, the “usability of data” has not improved in general. In fact, it has deteriorated precipitously in many cases. Questions like “How do I use this data?” or “Can I trust this data?” have become so prevalent several startups were founded in recent years just to solve that specific pain points for data analysts, data scientists, and business users.
The key to answering these questions and making data actionable is Metadata—data about data. In this talk, I’ll share my last 6 years of journey in tackling metadata at both LinkedIn and Metaphor and the lessons learned in harnessing the power of this refinery to turn crude oil into useful products.
