Hebrew at USF

Ulpan San Francisco

Since the summer of 1997 the Swig Program has offered Ulpan San Francisco, an intensive summer Hebrew language program. Open to the public, this program is the only Hebrew immersion program in Northern California open to students of all ages, offering five levels of Hebrew, from beginning through advanced. This unique program occurs annually in July. Currently there is no university credit given for this program.

The Swig Program in Jewish Studies and Social Justice offers several programs in Hebrew instruction. USF students may enroll in Hebrew I, II, III, IV, and V, which provide instruction in the reading, writing, and speaking of modern Hebrew, with additional attention paid to Biblical Hebrew. Basic grammar, vocabulary, and simple texts and audio materials will be presented, suited to the level of the course. Students will also get a glimpse of the only modern country where Hebrew language is spoken regularly, Israel, through films, songs, and games. Small class sizes allow personalized guidance while fulfilling foreign language requirements in just two semesters. Students will learn to speak modern Hebrew and will acquire the tools for reading and understanding the Hebrew Bible in its original language. Hebrew instruction for more advanced levels is offered through directed study for those who wish to continue there studies.
