USF Welcomes New Law School Dean

John Trasviña, dean of the School of Law

John Trasviña, assistant secretary for fair housing and equal opportunity in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, is the new dean of the School of Law. He began his five-year term June 17.

Trasviña served in President Barack Obama’s administration since 2009 and led more than 580 employees in 43 offices across the country, enforcing the nation’s fair housing laws. The U.S. Senate confirmed his nomination unanimously.

Previously, Trasviña served as president and general counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund. In 1997, former President Bill Clinton appointed him to the Office of Special Counsel for Immigration Related Unfair Employment Practices, where he led the only federal government office devoted solely to the workplace rights of immigrant workers.

Trasviña succeeds Jeffrey S. Brand, who is returning to the law school faculty after serving as dean for 14 years.
