Your internship responsibilities begin during your first full week of classes. You should be working in your agency 6-8 hours per week for 3 units of credit, or 8-10 hours per week for 4 units of credit.

Please note: If you do not get an "A" grade in journal theme #6, you cannot get an "A" in the class. If you miss more than 3 class meetings, you cannot get an "A" in the class.

Your course grade will be based on class participation and attendance, grades on your journal themes (especially #6), and the end of semester evaluation of your internship work by your supervisor.

 

As part of the Public Service Program requirment, students have volunteered to work with homeless children and homeless adults.

 

The following is a list of seminar meetings and assignments.

WED. Aug. 30 Orientation meeting UC 308 (Tom Rice Room), 5:30-7:00 PM.

WED. Sept. 6 Seminar meeting, UC 400, 5:30-7:00 PM. Journal Theme 1 is due. Be prepared to answer the questions for Dodd & Schott, "The Rise of the Administrative State," and Wilson, "Culture."

WED. Sept. 20 Seminar meeting, UC 308, 5:30-7:00 PM. Journal Themes 2 and 3 are due. Be prepared to answer the questions for Weber, "Bureaucracy," and Davis, "Understanding the Organizations."

WED. Oct. 4 Seminar Meeting, UC 308, 5:30-7:00 PM. Journal Theme 4 is due. Be prepared to answer questions on Fesler & Kettle, The Politics of the Administrative Process and McGregor, "The Human Side of Enterprise.

WED. Oct. 18 Seminar meeting, UC 308, 5:30-7:00 pm. Be prepared to discuss Johnson & Kraft, "Bureaucratic Whistleblowing & Policy Change," and Johnson, "Barbara Moulton, Early "Whistleblower." Videotape excerpts from "Serpico," "Silkwood," and "The Insider."

WED. Nov. 15 Seminar meeting, UC 308, 5:30-7:00 PM. Journal Theme 5 is due. Be prepared to answer questions on Pascale, "The Paradox of Corporate Culture."

Audiotape excerpts from NPR Morning Edition, "Job Training" in Siemens’ Wendell, North Carolina Plant

WED. Nov. 29 Seminar meeting, UC 308, 5:30-7:00 PM. Journal Theme 6 and 7 are due. Guest speaker.
