Writing Center Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where are you located?
A: We are located with the Learning Center in 215 Cowell Hall. Together we’re called
the Learning and Writing Center.

Q: What is the Learning Center?
A: The Learning Center tutors other subjects like statistics, business, and biology.

Q: What kind of help does the Writing Center give?
A: The Writing Center offers 25 minute appointments to help with all aspects of
your writing, from drafting and revision to final editing. We can help you focus
your ideas, organize your paragraphs, edit your sentences, or format your
documentation. We cannot, of course, do all of the above in one session.

Q: Do I need to bring in a finished paper?
A: No, you can bring in a draft or even an idea for a paper. Please bring your
assignment as well, so we can help you get started in the right direction.

Q: Can I drop off my paper to have it edited?
A: No. We do not edit papers for students. We will, however, help
you to learn how to edit your own papers.

Q: I went to the Writing Center but my paper still had errors in it.
A: We do not correct papers for students, nor can we make a paper “perfect.” Our
sessions are designed to help you focus on one aspect of your paper at a time and
give you feedback that will allow you to continue to work on your paper on your

Q: Why aren’t the Writing Center sessions longer? We didn’t have enough time
to get through the whole paper.
A: Our job is to help students become better writers, not just to “get through” a paper.

strategies to future papers--that is a successful session.

Q: How do I make an appointment?
A: Just call 422-6713 or drop by 215 Cowell. We’re open 10-8 Monday through
Thursday and until 5:00 on Friday. The front desk is ready to help you. We also
have drop-in Consultants in the library from 1-4, Monday through Thursday.
