Jesuit Opera
San Ignacio de Loyola

An Opera from the Jesuit Missions of Paraguay
By Domenico Zipoli, SJ (1688-1726); Martin Schmid, SJ (1694-1772); & a third anonymous composer
Directed by Michael A. Zampelli, SJ
Musical Direction by John Finney

Having the distinction of being the only surviving opera from the famous Jesuit missions of Paraguay (which the movie The Mission is based), this baroque opera reveals how Jesuits used music for missions, incorporating the artistic talents of the native populations.

It tells the story of St. Ignatius and his coming to understand how God’s love for him involves a deeper engagement with the world. The first movement of the opera charts Ignatius’ spiritual awakening through his interactions with angelic messengers and a diabolical tempter. The second movement presents the extension of Ignatius’ missionary fervor in his companion, Francis Xavier.
