Pomp and Circumstance

Graduation
Hundreds of USF graduates to walk in ceremonies May 16-17 at St. Ignatius Church.
Gowns and mortar board caps are in hand as family and friends of the latest crop of University of San Francisco graduates are set to begin arriving in the Bay Area for the 2008 spring commencement.

Ceremonies take place May 16-17 at St. Ignatius Church on the USF campus. In all, 1,604 students, including 964 undergraduates and 640 graduates, are invited to take part.

Ambassador Mark Dybul will be among seven distinguished guests to receive an honorary degree. Dybul will be singled out for his work at the forefront of the international fight against HIV/AIDS as the U.S. global AIDS coordinator. With an estimated 40 million people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide, more than half of those in sub-Sahara Africa, Dybul is a role model for USF students as someone with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed, and the values and sensitivity to be men and women for others.

"Dr. Dybul's life and work reflect USF's core value of advancing a 'culture of service that respects and promotes the dignity of every person,'" according to the award citation.

In addition to Dybul, honorary degree recipients include:

- President of Santa Clara University Paul L. Locatelli, S.J. for his two decades of tireless devotion to Jesuit education. The Superior General of the Society of Jesus recently named Fr. Locatelli secretary for higher education.

- John Wood, founder and CEO of the nonprofit Room to Read, for his organization's commitment to improving the lives of impoverished children in the developing world by breaking the cycle of poverty through the power of reading and education.

- Kevin Starr '62, University of Southern California history professor and former USF professor, for exemplifying USF's commitment to 'excellence as the standard of teaching, scholarship, creative expression, and service to the university community.'"

- Major General Antonio M. Taguba, U.S. Army, retired, for investigating and reporting on the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuses in 2004 in Iraq, thereby exemplifying a core USF value "to pursue truth and follow evidence to its conclusion."

- Charlotte Mailliard Shultz, California chief of protocol and former San Francisco chief of protocol, who has worked tirelessly for 40 years to introduce the culture, intellect, and economic resources of the San Francisco Bay Area and California to the world.

- Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the nonprofit Equal Justice Initiative of Alabama and professor at the New York University School of Law, for defending the rights of the poor and people of color in Alabama and other states who have been denied fair treatment under the legal system. His organization's work has helped reverse no fewer than 75 death sentences for Alabama prisoners.
