USF Welcomes New Faculty Members

All six schools and colleges have welcomed new faces this fall, with the University of San Francisco hiring 34 full-time faculty, including new deans in the School of Nursing and the School of Business and Management. One new faculty position was added in both the School of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences.

In the College of Arts and Sciences, 24 faculty were hired, two were hired in the School of Nursing, including Dean Judy Karshmer, four in the School of Education, two in the School of Law and one in the College of Professional Studies. Additionally, Mike Duffy was hired as the dean at the School of Business and Management.

College of Arts and Sciences

Jorge Aquino was hired in theology and religious studies. He is completing his doctorate at the Graduate Theological Union at Berkeley and previously served as a lecturer at Berkeley and as a fellow for the Hispanic Theological Initiative.

Sarah Burgess -- communication studies. Burgess earned a doctorate from UC Berkeley, where she previously taught as an instructor.

Joon-Seo Andrew Choi
-- in sport management. Choi completed his degree at the University of Northern Colorado, where he served as an instructor and as the graduate student director of the Sport Marketing Research Institute.

Corey Cook -- politics. Cook received his degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and previously taught at San Francisco State University.

Marilyn De Laure
-- communication studies. She earned her degree from the University of Iowa and was teaching at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Amie Dowling -- visual and performing arts. Dowling completed her degree from Smith College where she most recently taught.

Lilian Dube-Chirairo -- theology and religious studies. She received her doctorate from the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa and most recently taught at Lee University.

Christina Grijalva -- English. Grijalva is completing her degree at UC Berkeley and last year served as a dissertation fellow at USF.

Karina Hodoyan -- modern and classical languages. Hodoyan is completing her doctorate at Stanford University. Last year, she taught as an instructor at USF.

Eric Hongisto
-- visual and performing arts. He earned his degree from Yale University's School of Art, and previously taught at the University of Delaware and Montana State University at Bozeman.

Radmar Jao, S.J. -- in visual and performing arts. Jao is completing his degree at Loyola University, Chicago, and has worked as an artist facilitator for at-risk youth, a professional actor, and as an assistant to producers at Warner Bros.

John Wonyuup Kim
-- dissertation fellow in media studies. Kim is completing his doctorate at Stanford University, where he also served as an instructor and teaching assistant.

Diana Lattimore
-- exercise and sport science. Lattimore earned her degree from the University of South Carolina, where she also taught as an instructor for the past two years.

Elizabeth Lee-Brown -- communication studies. Lee-Brown received her degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where she taught as an instructor.

Zhiqiang Li -- modern and classical languages. Li completed his degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before joining USF, he taught courses at Tufts University, Boston College, and Tianjin Normal University in China.

Sami Rollins -- computer science. Rollins has a degree from UC Santa Barbara and has taken a leave of absence from Mount Holyoke College to teach at USF.

Tanu Sankalia -- visual and performing arts. Sankalia earned his degree from UC Berkeley and for the past seven years has worked at Field Paoli Architects in San Francisco. He has also taught courses at USF.

Eve Shapiro -- sociology. Shapiro completed her degree from UC Santa Barbara, where she taught as an instructor.

Hyunshun Shin -- chemistry. Shin completed her degree at Drexel University and last year was a visiting assistant professor at Philadelphia University.

David Silver -- media studies. Silver received his degree from the University of Maryland and for the past five years, and has taught at the University of Washington.

Victoria Siu, R.S.C.J. -- history. Sr. Siu completed her degree from Georgetown University and has taught as an adjunct faculty member at USF since 1993.

Aparna Venkatesan
-- physics. Venkatesan earned her degree from the University of Chicago and for the past four years has worked as a National Science Foundation Astronomy and Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Sunny (Man Chiu) Wong -- economics. Wong received his degree from the University of Oregon at Eugene. Before joining USF, he taught at the University of Southern Mississippi.

M.K. Stephen Yeung -- mathematics. Yeung completed his degree from Cornell University and since 2003, has taught at Utah State University.

School of Education

Shawn Bird -- teacher education. Bird previously worked as an assistant principal in Texas and earned his doctorate from the University of Houston.

Noah Borrero -- teacher education. Borrero previously served as director of East Palo Alto Stanford Academy at Stanford University, where he also received his doctorate.

Melissa Moreno -- dissertation fellow. She is currently completing her doctorate at the University of Utah.

Christine Yeh -- counseling psychology. She received her doctorate from Stanford University, and joins USF from Teachers College, Columbia University.

School of Law

Margaret Arnold -- associate dean for the law library. Arnold holds a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and previously served as the associate dean of the law library at Golden Gate University.

Richard Leo will teach at the law school. Leo received both his J.D. and doctorate from UC Berkeley. Previously, he worked at UC Irvine and the University of Colorado.

School of Nursing

Kia James. James has a master's degree in public health and a doctorate in education administration and leadership, both from the University of Minnesota.

Judy Karshmer -- new dean. Karshmer had been working as associate dean for the nursing school at the University of South Florida before coming to USF. She has more than 35 years of experience in academia, including as head of the nursing department at New Mexico State University.

School of Business and Management

Mike Duffy -- new dean. Duffy is a former accounting professor and a key fundraiser at the University of Southern California. He began his career in academe at UC Berkeley as an accounting professor. He went on to become vice dean of USC's MBA program before becoming director of corporate education programs at Duke University.

College of Professional Studies

Arthur Karshmer. Karshmer was most recently at the University of South Florida where he was a professor in the department of information technology. He earned both his master's degree and his doctorate at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
