John Blackwell, Associate Professor/Chair–Exercise and Sport Science, will perform in the upcoming Broadway by the Bay production of Funny Girl.

BretzkeJames T. Bretzke, S.J., Associate Professor–Theology and Religious Studies, presented two papers: “Human Rights as Human Rites: A Cross-Cultural Confucian Contribution to Human Rights Moral Discourse” at the western region of the American Academy of Religion’s annual convention at Whittier College in March, and “A Burden of Means: An Overlooked Aspect of the Terri Schiavo PVS Debate” at the Society of Christian Ethics conference at the University of the Pacific, San Francisco campus in February. He also gave two presentations in March for the Diocese of Stockton’s Ministry Celebration Day: “Contemporary Debates in Bioethics” and “Contemporary Debates in Sexual Ethics.” His most recent book, A Morally Complex World: Engaging Contemporary Moral Theology, has been published in the Philippines by the Jesuit Communications Foundation.

Dena Davis, Assistant Dean and Director, Charlene Lobo, Learning Center Coordinator, and Rebecca Snider, Freshman Programs Coordinator–Academic Support Services, presented “Improving Retention at USF: A Work in Progress” at the Association of College Administration Professionals annual conference March 16 in San Diego.

Raymond Dennehy, Professor–Philosophy, had his review of Faith and the Life of Intellect published in the April issue of American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly. His review of Jacques Maritain: An Intellectual Profile appears in the April issue of Homiletic and Pastoral Review. In March, he delivered the La Croix lecture, “Pro-abortion Arguments and their Philosophical Refutation,” at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo.

George Devine, Adjunct Professor–School of Business and Management, conducted a class in March on “Purchasing and Managing Income Property” for the Learning Annex in San Francisco. The seventh edition of his book, For Sale by Owner in California, was released in March by Nolo.com (Berkeley) in print and electronic formats.

Arthur Furst, Distinguished Professor Emeritus–Chemistry, received the Society of Toxicology’s Lifetime Achievement Award in March for his research of metal toxicology.

Phillip Hanson, Assistant Professor–College of Professional Studies, presented “Censorship, Audience, and the Differing Politics of the Shanghai Gesture as Play and Film” in January at the 20th annual film and literature conference in Tallahassee, Fla.

Virginia Kelsh, Professor–Law and Director–Law Library, wrote two articles, “The Law Library Mission Statement” and “Why We Need Academic Law Librarians: Adding Value to the Law School,” for an American Association of Law Libraries’ marketing publication.

Jack McLean, Director–Service Learning and Assistant Director–Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common Good, and David Robinson, S.J., Program Director–CPS and Director–Educational Mission and Spirituality of Learning, co-presented a workshop, “Mission-Based Education: The Formation of Civic Identity Through Service-Learning,” in March at the Western Region Campus Compact Consortium’s seventh annual Continuums of Service conference in San Diego. McLean also presented the session, “A Service-Learning Mission Requirement,” at the conference.

Molesky-PozJean Molesky-Poz, Assistant Professor–Theology and Religious Studies, was the keynote speaker in February on “Cosmology and Emerging Theologies” for the Sisters of Mercy regional theological education series in Burlingame.

John T. Sullivan, Fletcher Jones Professor–Biology, published an article, “Mitotic Responses to Extracts of Miracidia and Cercariae of Schistosoma Mansoni in the Amebocyte-Producing Organ of the Snail Intermediate Host Biomphalaria Glabrata,” in the February issue of the Journal of Parasitology.

Vance-TrembathSally Vance-Trembath, Assistant Professor–Theology and Religious Studies, spoke about the film The Passion of the Christ at a Tikkun Magazine-sponsored panel in March on Christianity and anti-Semitism. She discussed the same topic in March at the University of Creation Spirituality in Oakland and at USF. Last month, she also discussed biblical characters Naomi and Ruth at a St. Ignatius Parish program on women, art, and the Bible, and lectured on Vatican II at St. Vincent de Paul church.

Heinz Weihrich, Professor–School of Business and Management, will have his co-authored book, Principles of Management, published in India.
