Thomas A. Cavanaugh, Associate Professor–Philosophy, lectured last spring on “Medical Ethics and Ethical Theories” as part of St. Francis Memorial Hospital’s continuing medical education program. He inaugurated the speaker series at St. Hilary’s Church in Tiburon with his lecture, “A Good Death? PAS and Euthanasia.”


John Cobley, Professor–Chemistry, received a National Science Foundation research grant of $363,400 for the study of light regulation in certain bacteria. He gave presentations at the European Science Foundation conference near Naples, Italy in May and at an international symposium on phototropic prokaryotes (bacteria) in August in Tokyo, Japan.


Raymond Dennehy, Professor–Philosophy, had his article, “Physician-Assisted Suicide and Democracy,” published in the September issue of Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies.


James Forcier, Adjunct Instructor–Economics, was selected in August by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to review grant applications submitted under NSF’s Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs.


ZunesAndrew Heinze, Professor–History, will speak in November at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cambridge, at the University of New Hampshire, and at the History of Science Society meeting in Boston on his recent research concerning how the major religions have affected popular American thought.


Vamsee Juluri, Assistant Professor–Media Studies, had his book, Becoming a Global Audience: Longing and Belonging in Indian Music Television, published in September.

Patrick Murphy, Associate Professor–Politics, co-authored a paper, “A National Crisis or Localized Problems? Getting Perspective on the Scope and Scale of the Teacher Shortage,” for the journal Education Policy Analysis Archives in July. His co-authored report, “From the Headlines to the Frontlines: The Teacher Shortage and its Implications for Recruitment Policy,” was published in August by the Center on Reinventing Public Education.


Lester A. Myers, Assistant Professor–Business and Management, joined a panel of experts on business ethics in August to discuss the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 at the annual conference of the Society for Business Ethics in Seattle. He also participated in a September panel presentation on business and professional ethics in San Rafael organized by the USF North Bay Alumni Chapter.


Daniel A. Rascher, Director–Academics, Sport Management Program, testified in May at a California State Senate hearing on Senate Bill 193, legislating the treatment of college athletes by NCAA colleges and universities. He also co-wrote an article, “The Role of Stadia in the USA: Wealth Maximization in the National Football League,” in the yearly publication Proceedings of the European Association of Sport Management. He also was named to the editorial board of the Journal of Sport Management, the premier journal in the field published by the North American Society for Sport Management.


Donna M. Schaeffer, Program Director–Information Systems, and Charles F. Piazza, Associate Program Director–Master’s in Information Systems, co-authored an article, “Schumacher Expanded: Ethically Implementing Appropriate Technology Through National Information Technology Plans,” to be published in the Business and Professional Ethics Journal.


Sally Vance-Trembath, Assistant Professor–Theology and Religious Studies, Saera Khan, Assistant Professor–Psychology, and Stephen A. Privett, S.J., President, were inducted in September into USF’s inaugural chapter of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
