BoazCynthia Boaz, Assistant Professor–Politics, is teaching a master’s course, “Political Development and Democratization,” at the Centro Internacional Bancaja para la Paz y el Desarrollo in Castellon de la Plana, Spain.


Francis J. Buckley, S.J., Professor Emeritus–Theology, gave two public lectures this spring: “Spiritual Autobiography,” at the annual convention of the College Theology Society, in Milwaukee, and “New Technology Promotes Ecumenism,” at the International Society of Jesuit Ecumenists, in Budapest.


Darlene Conwell, Program Coordinator–Upward Bound, began her two-year term as president of the Western Association of Educational Opportunity Personnel in April.


Mary Lou DeNatale, Associate Professor–Nursing, presented “Health Education and Web-Based Information: A True Value for Older Adults” in April at the 21st annual International Computer and Technology Conference in Orlando, Fla. In the spring she began a series of lectures at senior centers and community agencies on sleep deprivation: “A Good Night’s Sleep: A Health Indicator” in March at the Los Altos Senior Center; “Get Some ZZZZ’s and Prevent Disease” in May at the Mountain View Community Center; “Sleep: Health Issues and Schedules” in May at the Alliance for Community Care Agency in Palo Alto; and “Issues Regarding Sleep” in June at the Peninsula Widows and Widowers Association in Los Altos. She also discussed education as part of a faculty panel in May at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Nursing.


Melissa Kenzig, Coordinator–Student Health Education Program, was elected representative to the health promotion section of the American College Health Association. She and Ray Quirolgico, Associate Director–Residence Life, presented a session in May titled “Addressing LGBTQ issues at Catholic Colleges and Universities: Implications for Faith-Based Institutions” at the American College Health Association’s annual meeting in Miami.


Lily Iona Mackenzie, Lecturer–Rhetoric and Composition, has published the following: a profile of Canadian artist Emily Carr in the fall issue of The Tampa Review; “Spirit of the Law” in the spring issue of Wazoo Journal; “The Real Story,” an essay on writing programs, in the journal The Rose and Thorn; “Deep Chords” in the spring issue of the San Francisco Jung Institute Library Journal; and “The Gray Ghost,” an article about the aircraft carrier USS Hornet, in the January issue of Heartland Magazine.


MoserTheresa Moser, R.S.C.J., Assistant Dean–Arts and Sciences, was elected secretary of the Catholic Theological Society of America in June at its annual meeting in Cincinnati.

Renate Otterbach, Senior Research Analyst–Institutional Research, published a review of Innovations in Science and Mathematics Education: Advanced Design for Technologies of Learning by Michael Jacobson and Robert Kozma, in the June issue of Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books.


Ray Quirolgico, Associate Director–Residence Life, co-presented a session in May titled “Creating Coalitions of Caring: How Health Promotion Can Enhance the Mission of Higher Education” at the American College Health Association’s annual meeting in Miami.


Pamela Redmond, Assistant Professor–Education, was selected by Converge magazine as one of the nation’s “Shapers of the Future of Education 2002.”


RicciPaolo Ricci, Professor–Environmental Science, was awarded a 2003-04 United States Agency for International Development sub-contract to develop a human health risk assessment program and implementation for Cairo, Egypt. He also co-authored the “Technical Peer Review of the U.S. Department of Energy Hanford Site Reactors B and C Risk Assessment” published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.


Colin Silverthorne, Professor–Psychology, presented his paper, “A Test of the Use of Social Power Across Cultures,” in May at the Western Psychological Association conference in Vancouver.


SimmonsGlori Simmons, Manager–Thacher Gallery, received a two-year Stegner Fellowship in fiction from Stanford University.


Sharon Siskin, Lecturer–Visual Arts, received more than $4,000 and a 2002-03 Artist Fellowship Award from the California Arts Council.


Sally Vance-Trembath, Assistant Professor–Theology, spoke to the St. Thomas More Society in June on the documents of Vatican II and structural change in the Church. She also presented a workshop on the documents of Vatican II to the East Bay branch of The Voice of the Faithful, a Catholic lay group responding to the Episcopal crisis in the Catholic Church by supporting victims and priests of integrity, and working for structural change in the Catholic Church.


Stephanie Vandrick, Professor–Communication Studies, had her book, Writing for Scholarly Publication: Behind the Scenes in Language, published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates this spring.
