Café at the Crossroads
By Jessica Robles
A latte with your pepperoni? Showing it has the modern students tastes at heart, the university is diversifying the food and space at Crossroads, University Centers student-run café, with the addition of a pizza oven and refurbishment of its coffee counter.
Changes will include a new décor, designed by restaurant designer and Hospitality Management advisory board member Bob Puccini, improved lighting, and a new stairway on the cafés east side, connecting Crossroads with the second floors World Fare.
Puccini said he envisions a lot more light and color for the remodeled Crossroads, including a new floor with arcs of intersecting and overlapping carpet color, columns wrapped in blue metal finished with swirling designs, and carbon plastic pendant light fixtures with colorful etchings. It will be a radical improvement to switch from florescent to incandescent lighting, Puccini said. Youll actually see for a change. It will make everything seem richer.
The changes will help the space cater to club functions, said Marcie Takumi, ASUSF business manager. The permanent stage area will become portable to allow more room for shared seating between the coffee bar and pizza counter. As an additional (perhaps necessary) service, the pizza counter will also deliver on campus in the evenings. Were expecting a lot more business, Takumi said.
Food service provider Bon Appetit will take over management of Crossroads but it will remain student-run. Construction should be completed by October.
